Nineteen ninety marks the fiftieth anniversary of the American military presence in Newfoundland and Labrador. In this spectacular review, the author describes the highlights of each major U.S. base and other installations from 1940 or 1990. Vintage photographs and documents illustrate the importance and significance of events during this period and leave the reader with the full realization of the military importance placed on Newfoundland and Labrador during the past five decades. 

During the years of the Second World War, over 750,000 American servicemen passed through the many U.S. bases and installations; over 100,00 were stationed here for a number of years; over 25,000 married Newfoundland women. While many papers have been written on the social and economic effects the Americans had on the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, this is the first factual story of the fifty years of change in Newfoundland's history.
